Christmas Bird Count

This event is no longer on sale.

Saturday December 18

8:00 AM  –  12:00 PM

The Christmas Bird Count is a great way to help to determine the bird population at Tyler Arboretum. We have been doing this for over 45 years and we would love to have you join in on the fun! This year, we are breaking up the day. Registration is required. Sign up for one or both! (Sessions sold separately)

Early Morning Owl Prowl, 5 am - 7 am, meet in Tyler Parking Lot

We will be hiking out with guide Sarah Boucas-Neto to see owls in the Pinetum, as well as some areas outside the deer exclusion fence. Be on the lookout for screech owls and saw-whet owls. Although we have not sited a long-eared owl for a while, we will also be on the lookout for this shy bird. The group will return to the parking lot by 7 am.

Christmas Bird Count, 8 am - 12 pm, meet in Tyler Parking Lot

Join Sarah Boucas-Neto, bird lead, and others as we cover lots of territory. Where you go will depend upon how much of a challenge you want to experience. We will be dividing participants into groups to explore meadows, woodlands, and stream edges. One group will be staying inside the Arboretum deer exclusion fence for a gentler hike. We’ll be looking for many of our friends: sparrows, robins, cardinals, nuthatches, kinglets, raptors, and many more.

Intended for all-level birders. Rain or shine. Please wear layers and have appropriate hiking shoes or boots for wet conditions. Bring hiking sticks to assist in challenging terrain and binoculars. Pack water and food. Your leads will be responsible for documentation or will assign someone to do so. Teamwork is expected.

Per the recommendations from the CDC and the PA Department of Health, Tyler Arboretum is no longer requiring visitors to mask while outdoors. We kindly ask that all visitors wear masks when entering Tyler’s buildings.

Members: FREE; Non-members: $15 each class
