Step into the nighttime world and discover what’s flying after dark!

Explore moths and other nocturnal insects during an evening of mothing. Gather around light stations that attract these often-overlooked pollinators, and observe their surprising colors, patterns, and behaviors up close. A local mothing expert will be on-site to help identify species and share tips you can use at home. Learn a few common species, discover why moths matter, and pick up simple ways to support them in your own backyard.

This relaxed, eye-opening program is perfect for curious adults, teens, and anyone who’s never noticed how alive the night can be. Arrive curious, leave inspired.

Important information:

• This program takes place after Tyler’s regular hours.
• Gates open at 8:45 pm — please arrive on time.
• Park in the overflow lot and check in with the staff associate.
• Light stations are a short walk from the parking lot.
• Rain date: Saturday, August 15; 9:00 pm–12:00 am. You will be notified of any postponement via the email used to register. Please check your inbox before heading out.
• Stay as long as you’d like—the event runs until midnight.

What to expect:

• Walk over uneven ground in low light
• Gather around illuminated sheets to observe moths and other insects
• Interact with a local mothing expert who can answer questions and offer tips
• Enjoy a relaxed, informal experience with time for questions
• Experience the Arboretum after hours in a small group setting
• Restrooms available
• Water fountain and bottle refilling station

What to wear and carry:

• Closed-toe shoes with good tread
• Dress for the weather; light layers recommended
• Flashlight
• Reusable water bottle

PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED. A registered adult must accompany teens.

GUEST PASS HOLDERS (for non-members only): Adults 18+: $17 each; Teens (ages 13-17): $15 each. Please give the staff member your guest passes at check-in. Each participant must submit a pass. If you are accompanying a participating Family or higher-level member, please let the staff member know.
