Pink Hill Tour - Tyler's Serpentine Barren

This event is no longer on sale.

Saturday May 8

9:30 AM  –  11:45 AM

For Adults (18+) and Youth ages 15+

Pink Hill is renowned as a “serpentine barren,” yet the ancient grassland there is anything but barren. Serpentine barrens are globally rare ecosystems and hotspots for biodiversity, including many imperiled species. Of roughly 40 locations described a century ago in the eastern U.S., less than 20 remain, and all of those have lost species due to habitat shrinkage. Pink Hill showcases the only surviving serpentine barren of 10 that once existed in Delaware County. Hear about the barrens’ origins and links to continental collision, extinct megafauna, and Native American prehistory; see the unique landscape and some of the endangered and threatened species; and learn what Tyler is doing to restore and sustain this geological, ecological, and cultural treasure.  Late April is when we hope to see the bright pink moss phlox in bloom, a native flower that gave Pink Hill its name.

This moderately-paced hike is for adults and teens. Please arrive by 9:30 am to check in at the Visitor Center patio window, where you'll meet your group and be escorted to Pink Hill, a walk of about 25 minutes. Once you arrive at Pink Hill, the tour will run from 10 to 11:15 am, and then the group will depart for the walk back to the Visitor Center, arriving at 11:45 am. Please wear appropriate walking shoes, and bring a reusable water bottle.  Overall time at Tyler is 9:30 - 11:45 am.
